Leave the fragment alone

Stop turning the broken key and do not push a spare into the cylinder. Avoid glue or improvised tools: they can make extraction harder or damage the lock. Keep the loose key pieces for the locksmith.

Explain whether you are locked out or the door is open but cannot be secured. If anyone is in immediate danger, contact the emergency services.

Record what happened

  • Did the key break while locking or unlocking?
  • Is part of the key visible, or is it inside the cylinder?
  • Was the key or handle already stiff?
  • Is the door timber, uPVC or composite?

A photograph may help an attending business identify the lock, but do not dismantle anything to get one.

Extraction, repair or a replacement lock?

Removing the fragment does not always resolve the original problem. Ask the locksmith to assess the key, cylinder, locking mechanism and door alignment. Replacement may be appropriate if the lock is damaged or remains unreliable; it should follow a diagnosis rather than an assumption.

What should the quote include?

Confirm the attendance charge, extraction or opening work, replacement parts if needed and any applicable VAT or out-of-hours charge. Ask whether the initial quote is an estimate and when additional work would need your agreement.

For a replacement, ask for the lock specification, the number of supplied keys and the guarantee terms. Confirm timing directly with the attending business.

Check the underlying problem has been addressed

Ask the locksmith to demonstrate the lock and door working together before finishing. If it still needs force or the handle still catches, ask for an explanation. Keep the invoice and details of the fitted parts for any follow-up.
